Matti Näränen is a film editor based in Helsinki, Finland. Matti has completed a Master’s degree in film editing in Aalto University. He has been working as an editor since 2008 and he has edited several feature length documentaries as well as fictions, docuseries and short form. His movies have been selected to numerous festivals including IDFA, CPH:DOX, Hot Docs and DocPoint.

Matti was nominated for best editing in the 2024 Amanda Awards (Norway) for the Praying For Armageddon (together with Torkel Gjørv), 2023 Finnish Film Awards for The Sheperds of the Earth, 2019 Estonian Film Awards for Rodeo and 2017 Finnish Film Awards for The War and The Peace Of Mind. The War and The Peace of Mind was also nominated for best documentary and it premiered in Finland as an opening movie for Docpoint festival. In 2023 Golden Panda awards Matti won Golden Panda Award for Best Editing in Documentary for Kids Cup.

Matti has attended Berlinale Talents Editing Studio and he has been part of the Doc.Incubator workshop for two times - as an observer 2018 and as an editor 2019. Besides editing Matti works as an editing consultant and he has also been a mentor in Documentary Africa workshop in Zanzibar. In 2021 Matti founded a film editing company Smooth Cut Oy. Matti is a member of the Finnish Documentary Guild, Filmiaura Ry (Finnish Film Academy) and Finnish Cinema Editors F.C.E.
